Ibuap, would you care to explain what you mean here? I'm not sure i understand what you object to in the edit i deletion i reverted. Seems to me that a section on alternate names, especially for a body of water which has had them over the years, is reasonable ~ i am quite happy to learn and to discuss, it's just that i need to know the parameters to begin with. Thanks. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello14:30, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Lindsay, I think I see where you’re coming from. An alternate names section does make sense, especially given the historical and cultural variations in naming bodies of water over time. This approach could actually help provide a balanced view, acknowledging the historical names without making the lead too crowded or contentious. If Ibuap has specific concerns about the edit, it’d be great to hear those details so we can understand any objections. Perhaps we can find a way to include the alternate names in a way that respects all perspectives. Thanks for opening this up for discussion! Hajpo (talk) 19:39, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, as every gulf has been named after its sea, this sea is technically referred to as the Persian Sea, not that 'arabian sea'. Secondly, as a massive significant minority, all Persians around the globe and the Iranian ethnic groups and their descendants, potentially more than just that, refer to this body of water as “the Persian Sea” it is necessary and unavoidable to put the term “Persian Sea” as the lead of the article or as an alternative name for it. 151.241.254.19 (talk) 10:49, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your perspective, and it’s clear that the naming of seas and gulfs is a sensitive topic due to cultural and historical associations. However, the term "Arabian Sea" is widely recognized and used in most official maps, international organizations, and publications. That said, the addition of "Persian Sea" as an alternative name in the article could be a reasonable compromise, acknowledging that it's a term used by many Iranians and their descendants. Including this as an alternate term would provide context without altering the primary name, helping reflect the diverse perspectives on this body of water. Thanks for bringing this up! A sea that barely touches iran shouldn't be named after it, at least in the lead. The alt name already exists in the article in its own section, wish I am actually going to propose its deletion as it is an irrelevant name and was almost never called that way Abo Yemen✉19:44, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
