Personal life: racial self-identification

[edit]

Perhaps we should include the full context of Ronaldo's remarks? He was condemning racism; according to our sources, he said "Acho que todos os negros sofrem. Eu, que sou branco, sofro com tamanha ignorância" (I believe all black people suffer [from racism]. I, as a white person, suffer from seeing such ignorance.") Of course, from a US-centered perspective, his remarks may seem odder than in Brazil, but if he had said the magical (English) words "white-passing", people would not have thought it strange (except in so far as he is not that range in the US, though he arguably is in Brazil). Requested move 29 April 2023

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Not moved. There is no evidence of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. There are several entries on the existing page Ronaldo. A simple google search of the name returns results for Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the individuals listed on the page. Claiming WP:PRIMARYTOPIC just because you "think" something is the ptopic without any evidence to support it is not a reason to request a move. Hence, I am speedy closing this RM as no evidence was provided to support the move request. (non-admin closure) Estar8806 (talk) 17:33, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ronaldo (Brazilian footballer)Ronaldo – I think the Brazilian footballer is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. If he isn't, you all should vote Speedy close. ErceÇamurOfficial (talk) 16:53, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ronaldo (Brazilian footballer)Ronaldo (footballer, born 1976) – Incomplete disambiguation. There are many other Brazilian footballers named Ronaldo on Wikipedia, such as Ronaldo (footballer, born October 1996), Ronaldo (footballer, born August 1996), Ronaldo (footballer, born 1991), Ronaldo (footballer, born 1980), Ronaldo (footballer, born 1990) ... 162 etc. (talk) 00:48, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unlikely to be changed. The article, initially just named Ronaldo, was changed to Ronaldo (Brazilian footballer) to differentiate him from the Portuguese footballer (Cristiano Ronaldo), hence why you will hear, "Ronaldo, the Brazilian one", when people are talking of this one rather than Cristiano. When people click on this page they are specifically looking for this Ronaldo (ie. the Brazilian one rather than the Portuguese). The other, much much lesser known players named Ronaldo from Brazil (four article stubs and the other not much more than that), are listed in the disambiguation page in the hatnote. We always go for most familiarity for article titles (hence why other singers (or people) named Michael Jackson are listed in the dab page, while the most famous one is just Michael Jackson). Nampa DC (talk) 09:52, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not exactly. Please see WP:PDAB. 162 etc. (talk) 14:42, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose move. This is a PDAB situation, despite technically having multiple qualifiers. O.N.R. (talk) 18:15, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, this Ronaldo is the PDAB for Brazilian footballer.--Ortizesp (talk) 20:19, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per page views analysis: this (Brazillian footballer) is credited with over 99% of all page views over the latest 20 days over 8 others.[1]. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:40, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. GiantSnowman 15:13, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as above - clearly the most notable Brazilian footballer called Ronaldo (and also, for some of us of a certain age, the most famous footballer called Ronaldo full stop). GiantSnowman 15:16, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. The fact "Ronaldo" needs to be disambiguated with not just one word but two shows the article has no reason not to conform to the standard disambiguation. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:03, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per the fact that Ronaldo would not be appropriate, but that in terms of disambiguation for football biographies, we first go to nationality over birth, and that this Ronaldo is the most notably Brazilian one. Often referred to as Brazilian Ronaldo as well. This page name makes sense for practicality and common name purposes. Also, most importantly, I cite WP:PDAB. Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:48, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • No we don't. For footballers, we go with year of birth over nationality almost every time. Have done for years. WP:INCDAB states that the threshold for a primary topic in a disambiguated title is very high. The fact he's not even the primary topic for a footballer called Ronaldo, even less for the name Ronaldo alone, shows that he does not meet this threshold. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:11, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • What do you mean "no we don't"? Yes we do! Nationality is almost always a more practical disambiguator than birth year; when we can, we disambiguate by nationality. And Ronaldo per PDAB is the most notably Ronaldo (Brazilian footballer), this is a specific scenario. Keeping him at the current name is helpful for editors and viewers. Paul Vaurie (talk) 00:08, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. He's often referred to as the Brazilian Ronaldo, matching the article title, and given article traffic he is the topic highly likely sought by a reader over his little known compatriots who share the name. There is zero confusion with the title, altering it with a date would only add confusion. Unfortunately Cristiano Ronaldo forced the well known qualifier (Brazilian) by those too young to have seen the original Ronaldo. Messi R9 R10 CR7 Thiago LFC (talk) 13:37, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

June 2002 World Cup Photo

[edit]

In the article, The photo titled File:Salvaronaldo.jpg says it was taken June 29/30 2002.

The timeline doesn't make sense. He doesn't have the 2002 world cup haircut in the photo. (2002 has the thick front and shaved head, in the photo its grown out and uniform, but shorter than the front haircut he had) and this photo was taken either the day prior on on the day of the world cup. Perhaps the camera date was wrong? MatthewNewHouse (talk) 22:39, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Urgent Edit Request - Ronaldo is not the owner of CRUZEIRO anymore

[edit]

Hey guys, so the first paragraph (below) in this page have to be updated, Ronaldo sold the brazilian club CRUZEIRO, and its not the owner anymore.

"Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima (Brazilian Portuguese: [ʁoˈnawdu ˈlwiz nɐˈzaɾju dʒi ˈlimɐ]; born 18 September 1976), mononymously known as Ronaldo, is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a striker. X He is the owner of Brasileiro Série A club Cruzeiro X and owner and president of La Liga club Real Valladolid."

see here... https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5459944/2024/04/30/ronaldo-cruzeiro-ownership-valladolid/

and here.... https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/brazil-great-ronaldo-selling-stake-boyhood-club-cruzeiro-2024-04-30/

short story: " April 29 (Reuters) - Brazil great Ronaldo has agreed to sell his majority stake in Cruzeiro, the club where he made his senior debut, the Brazilian Serie A team announced on Monday.

Ronaldo, 47, agreed with BPW Sports company to sell the 90% stake he acquired in 2021 for $70 million through his company Tara Sports Brasil.

No details were given on how much BPW Sports are paying for the stake.

The former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid forward helped clear the club's $195 million debt and led their return to the domestic top flight in 2022 after three seasons in Serie B."

thank you! CJ Bellic (talk) 18:48, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The sources say he agreed to sell it, but it doesn't sound like the sale has taken place yet. I've added a blurb about the proposed sale to the article. OhNoitsJamie Talk 20:03, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The sale did actually happen (at the time of that report, nonetheless), to the extent where this issue has already been fixed on the Portuguese Wikipedia. 189.78.166.188 (talk) 22:55, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The header section of this article still lists Ronaldo as the owner of Cruzeiro, despite the sale of his shares to Pedro Lourenço having already been concluded at the time it was initially reported. Fittingly, the information was already corrected in the Portuguese Wikipedia. In any case, if there is still doubt, here is a source that describes how the latter confirmed the acquisition in an interview and what were his immediate actions upon taking charge: [1] 179.98.178.128 (talk) 22:25, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the MOS:LEDE to reflect the sale. Thanks, Robby.is.on (talk) 23:35, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
