In 1821, MacGregor went to Britain and claimed that George Frederic Augustus made him "Cazique" (prince) of Poyais and announced that he was there to find investment and settlers for the new country.[145] MacGregor claimed that the land was extremely fertile,[150] there was plenty of fish and animals to eat[151] and that large amounts of gold were found in the rivers[144] although none of these were true.[152] MacGregor sold lots of land to settlers[144] and had them exchange their British pounds for (fraudulent) Poyais dollars.[144] Some 250 people took up the offer and sailed to Poyais in 1821 and 1822, finding that it was not as claimed with some getting sick and dying of malaria with only fewer than 50 returning to Britain.[144] MacGregor was tried for fraud after he tried the Poyais scam in France.[144][145]
