[edit]"On Wikipedia, Foster is known as Ta bu shi da yu, and is notorious for stalking some individuals, watching their every WikiMove, seemingly on a minute-by-minute basis." - welcome to the world of watchlists! - Ta bu shi da yu 07:51, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Surprisingly, this article doesn't get vandalized as much as you'd think. Rhobite 14:34, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC)

Donation drive
[edit]Rusty (user Kuro5hin) seems intent on removing all mention of the donation drive. But the donation drive did occur, did raise $70k and led to the CMF proposal. Rusty: what facts do you believe are "lies"? Charles Godwin 11:19, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I thought the fundraising drive raised $35,000. Got a cite? Anyway the drive should be mentioned. The rest are silly allegations, troll stuff. If the CMF (or lack thereof) is mentioned anywhere, it should be Kuro5hin. Rhobite 16:34, Apr 8, 2005 (UTC)
- In The fundraiser ends, and the next stage begins, rusty says the fundraiser garnered "$37,000 in memberships, donations, and text ads, along with perhaps another $2500 in donation pledges, and an unknown amount in pay-by-mail memberships." That's at least $39,500. In a comment to that story, rusty said that "the salary [he] is asking for is $58K. What [he] will take home from that is $34K or so," but in Day two wrapup, and a change of plans, he had stated that "I think that today we can easily reach the halfway mark, $35,000," so there does indeed appear to be some confusion on rusty's part about both the original fundraising goal and final amount raised. Though rusty said that "[he] should be able to report a final 'grand total' in a few weeks," no final total was ever reported in the Support Kuro5hin category or in the comments of any story therein. Trollaxor (talk) 00:09, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
- Charles - Rusty doesn't have to answer that at all, if the facts are disputed, then it's up to us to give a source for them. And a source does not mean "some guy's blog" - either we have clear references from reputable sources or we don't include this. Yes, it's considered a bad idea for people to edit articles about themselves, but we can hardly expect Rusty not to react to allegations here - the best idea is for us to make it so he doesn't have to. If the article is clear, sourced, and from a neutral point of view then he won't need to edit -- sannse (talk) 10:28, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- You raise a good point. Somewhat alarmingly, I am not able to find any records proving that the Collaborative Media Foundation that rusty talked about founding ever existed. If anyone has any sources or knows how to search public records for non-profit/not-for-profit entities, please chime in. Trollaxor (talk) 00:35, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
- If there is no record of the CMF existing, chances are it was some kind of scam. Rusty claimed on his blog that he spent it fixing his house instead of improving Scoop and Kur5hin. Rustina0 (talk) 07:12, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Monocle
[edit]The final paragraph goes "A long-running joke is that Rusty wears a monocle and enjoys yachting. The joke is a reference to the success of Kuro5hin's pledge drive". I think this needs to be further explained; it makes no sense. -Ashley Pomeroy 17:17, 4 September 2005 (UTC)
- I added a context and references for the "monocle" joke. Xunker 07:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
- Something to do with the Monopoly Man, he used to wear a monocle or something before they removed it from him. Spent the money on hampster monocle polish made from hamsters or something like that? Rustina0 (talk) 07:14, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Armstrong Zuniga
[edit]Armstrong Zuniga has been dissolved. The reference to it here sould either be removed, or put into past tense.
Update
[edit]So if he's no longer the CTO, where dose he work now?
- Well, why don't you send the wikistapo after him to find out? Ninth Circle
- I thought everybody knew that Rusty just sails the world on the superyacht he bought with the CMF funds, laughing and polishing his monocle. Or something. Ubernostrum 18:26, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Any claims about Foster must be backed up by reliable sources
[edit]Note that per WP policy WP:BLP and WP:RS, any claims about Foster, especially controversial ones like anything about a "gay marriage", must be backed up by reliable sources. Message board threads by others discussing Foster, even if they are on Foster's own website, are inappropriate. If you have questions, ask them here before you insert dubious material in the article. Edit warring about this will only get you blocked. Gamaliel (talk) 17:04, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Rusty is Dead Hoax
[edit]I was duped about this story at first. It was on Reddit in the tech area. Someone clued me in that Rusty's Twitter account was active and he was not dead. I am looking for reliable independent sources on this hoax. I have added two so far. One of them mentions @RustyK instead of @RustyK5 as the Twitter account. There is a user named Tiber who did it, I asked Rusty on Twitter about it and he said Tiber already told him about it. I cannot prove that Tiber was in on it with Rusty to get media attention in 'disruptive journalism' to drive marketing to Kuro5hin, but I suspect it a bit. But my further tweets with Rusty he blocked me before I could learn more. I will be adding any sources I find out this, but somehow they seem to be the only reliable, third party, independent sources on Rusty Foster. That he was a victim of a prank/hoax, so that is all I can prove. The other stuff that references Kuro5hin links most likely needs to be removed or find another source for them. I can't seem to find any sources on the CMF fundraising, or Rusty's connection with The Daily Kos, or a review of Rusty's software Scoop, or anything else for that matter as the Internet is full of Kuro5hin trolls writing about Mr. Foster that has Google Bombed the results to the first few pages. Arno Stark (talk) 06:36, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
- Slashdot has a story suggesting the hoax was perpetrated by Rusty himself. =//= Johnny Squeaky 06:39, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
- Do you have a link to it? Arno Stark (talk) 22:17, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Notability?
[edit]Does anyone really give a damn about this guy? He scored an advertising deal for his group weblog 13 years ago and hasn't done anything interesting since. AfD, imo.
Tripel sec (talk) 01:36, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
- For that reason, I suggested merging this article into Kuro5hin. Jarble (talk) 11:41, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
- Kuro5hin's Alexa Rank on 2015-07-21 was about 300,000, significantly lower (ie. more popular) than many notable sites which have Wikipedia articles. I have a cyberstalker whose Kuro5hin nick is "modus"; modus argues against my own notability whenever someone submits a Wikipedia article about me, he argues against Kuro5hin's notability. Consider that Abraham Lincoln died in 1865 yet he is still regarded as notable enough for Wikipedia. User_Talk:MichaelCrawford 67.206.183.8 (talk) 22:09, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
- Arguably, that wasn't very interesting either.142.105.195.20 (talk) 15:59, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
- I vote delete. Completely fails notability. CTA MART (talk) 18:20, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- I vote for merge. Trollaxor (talk) 00:31, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- I'd merge as well. I can't really see this passing WP:ANYBIO #2. Honestly the Kuro5hin page needs a lot of work too, especially in the citation department. Inanygivenhole (talk) 22:37, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- @Inanygivenhole: I recommend both are kept without merging. It's almost getting to a year now. Let's solve this move issue once and for all. Thanks. →Enock4seth (talk) 06:48, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
- WP:BOLD editing would have solved it once and for all as well. I had forgotten about this page to tell you the truth, and if nobody fixes this by the time I get around to it I'll do whatever the consensus is. BTW--I can't help but note that you didn't provide a criteria, was that not a vote (it's a little ambiguous)? Inanygivenhole (talk) 00:25, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- I think it's time to close the merge discussion as "no merge". The article now has 6 paragraphs, of which only the first mentions Kuro5hin. If anyone still has notability concerns, please take it to AfD.--greenrd (talk) 18:05, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- Kuro5hin was a troll site, Rusty claimed he created it for the LULZ. He claimed it was an experiment that failed. He made a lot of money off advertising on K5 and building Scoop sites for other people. It should be noted that Rusty did not write Scoop all by himself, it was a team he hired and many walked away or quit over time because Rusty used the CMF money to fix his house instead of Scoop and K5. Some say this makes Rusty a scam artist or an e-beggar, but Rusty ran K5 for as long as he could and since it made him look bad as K5 hosted troll stories like FNH, Kuro5hin going down meant Rusty keeps all of that troll material off his Google search. This is actually Internet History as the rise and fall of Scoop and the CMF is one of the first startups that succeeded by failing. Orion Blastar (talk) 03:43, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
Post-Kuro5hin Era
[edit]Rusty Foster has influenced a lot of people to try their own web blogs and other things. Kuro5hin still lives on here:
- Kuro5hin at Facebook
- Kuro5hin at Imzy
- Don't Sue Me Bro aka DSMB which is currently down
- Kreddit
- FreeK666 Trying to open source the Kr5ddit code to become FreeK666 so anyone can host it like they did Scoop
Please feel free to add in any other groups or sites influenced by Kuro5hin. Orion Blastar (talk) 03:47, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
